Sodium aurothiomalate is a drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. It is also known as gold sodium thiomalate, gold thiomalate, or gold salt. It is an immunosuppressant that blocks the production of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-2 receptor, IL-2, and TNF-α by inhibiting the activation of transcription factors such as NF-κB. Sodium aurothiomalate has been shown to be effective in reducing inflammation in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases, with fewer side effects than nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The drug binds to DNA at specific sites called response elements that regulate gene expression. This binding prevents the transcription of genes encoding proinflammatory cytokines.
