Sarcosine ethyl ester hydrochloride is a quaternary ammonium compound that has been shown to inhibit the transcription-polymerase chain reaction. It also inhibits receptor activity, and has been found to be useful in the prognosis of congestive heart failure. Sarcosine ethyl ester hydrochloride has also been shown to have an antiinflammatory effect when used on solid tumours. This drug is also capable of inhibiting polymerase chain reactions and can be used as a reagent for DNA synthesis in cancer tissues. A hydroxyl group on the drug's structure allows it to form hydrogen bonds with other molecules. The drug is an ester and therefore can undergo hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, reduction by glutathione reductase, or conjugation with glucuronic acid.
