Sodium nifurstylenate is a monoclonal antibody that binds to seriola, a bacterium that causes inflammation of the gums. The drug has been shown to be bactericidal against Serratia marcescens and Staphylococcus aureus when used in combination with sulfa drugs. Sodium nifurstylenate is administered intravenously as a liquid preparation that is prepared by dissolving the drug in sterile water for injection and adding sodium chloride to adjust the pH. It has been shown to have no effect on erythrocytes, platelets, or blood cells. Sodium nifurstylenate is an experimental drug that has not been approved for use in humans.
