Sodium stannate trihydrate is an inorganic compound that has been used as a disinfectant. It is an alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide and stannic acid. Sodium stannate trihydrate is used to remove organic matter, such as proteins and lipids, from surfaces. It can be used to disinfect surfaces by reacting with hydrochloric acid or ethanolamine to form hydrogen peroxide or sodium chloride, respectively. This chemical also has the ability to remove polycarboxylic acids from surfaces. Sodium stannate trihydrate reacts with nonpolar solvents such as ethers and chloroform to produce a precipitate of sodium carbonate. This chemical has been shown to have a microsphere morphology in thin section electron microscopy (TEM) analysis.
