D-serine benzyl ester hydrochloride is a synthetic amino acid that is used in the synthesis of ferrichrome, an iron-chelating agent. It is optically active and can be obtained as either a racemic mixture or as one of the two optical isomers. D-serine benzyl ester hydrochloride has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria that produce siderophores, such as Erwinia carotovora, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Serratia marcescens. The antiproliferative effects on human tumor cells have been shown to be mediated by inhibition of hydrogenolysis, which prevents the conversion of proline to glutamate and lysine. D-serine benzyl ester hydrochloride also inhibits the production of chrysanthemic acid from chrysanthemi oil. The biological activity of this compound may be due to its ability to bind with antibodies produced against Rhodotor
