Silver acetate is an antimicrobial agent that exhibits its effect by reacting with proteins and nucleic acids. Silver acetate has been shown to be effective against inflammatory bowel disease in experimental models, which may be due to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) activity of silver ions. Silver acetate binds to DNA, leading to inhibition of bacterial replication and cell death. The polymerization of silver acetate is initiated by light exposure, which increases the antimicrobial activity of the compound. Silver acetate also inhibits the growth of galleria mellonella larvae that are exposed to a dose group. This anti-inflammatory property may be due to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis caused by metal ion release from the compound.
