Sodium hexachloroosmiate(IV) dihydrate is a coordination compound that belongs to the class of sulfides. It is a white, crystalline compound with a melting point of 230° Celsius and a density of 2.8 g/cm3. It has been used as an experimental tool in electron microscopy studies because it can be localized ultrastructurally by electron microscopy and can stain myelogenous cells with leukocytes, nuclear DNA, and sulfoxide. Sodium hexachloroosmiate(IV) dihydrate has been shown to have antileukemic properties in animal models. These properties may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of leukocytes and the production of chlorides.
