N,N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediiminocobalt(II) is a copper complex of a fatty acid. It is synthesized by the reaction of ethylene diamine with a metal bromide, followed by the addition of a copper salt. The chemical structure of this ligand is similar to that of other chelating ligands such as EDTA and DTPA. The copper complexes are used in catalytic oxidation reactions to convert organic molecules into carboxylic acids. This type of catalytic oxidation has been shown in plants such as solanum tuberosum, where it functions as an antioxidant and prevents damage caused by reactive oxygen species. N,N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediiminocobalt(II) also has cell-culture properties that inhibit the growth of cancer cells and induce apoptosis.
