Description:

N-Salicylideneaniline is a model system for the study of hydrogen bonding and intramolecular hydrogen. It has been shown that N-Salicylideneaniline has a deuterium isotope effect, where the presence of deuterium atoms increases the electronic coupling between the nitrogen atom and hydrogen bond. This is because the electrons are more spread out around the nitrogen atom when there is a deuterium atom present, which makes it easier for them to move. The molecule can be divided into two parts, with each part having different properties. The protonated form (HN=C) can be described as being neutral in pH while the unprotonated form (HNC) is an acid at pH values greater than 7. Hydrogen bonding plays an important role in transport properties of this molecule.
