- 4-methyl-N-sulfinylbenzenesulfonamide
- N-Sulfinyl-4-toluenesulfonamide
N-Sulfinyl-p-toluenesulfonamide is a chiral sulfoxide with the formula CHOSO2. It is prepared from p-toluenesulfonyl chloride and ammonia in two steps, via the intermediacy of N-sulfinylbenzene. The compound crystallizes as an oil. The molecule has a S=O bond to sulfur and a sulfide group attached to oxygen, which are both located on opposite sides of the ring. This configuration allows for greater stability than an equatorial position would afford because it reduces the steric interactions between these groups. NMR spectroscopic data show that the molecule has a vinyl ether substitution at position 3, which is responsible for its reactivity. The compound reacts with boron trifluoride etherate in chloroform to give aldehydes as products. Aldehyde formation can be predicted because this reaction leaves an alcohol as one of its byproducts; therefore
