Substance P (7-11) is a neurotransmitter that is found in the brain and in the gastrointestinal tract. It has been shown to play a role in the transmission of nerve impulses and muscle contraction as well as intestinal contractions. Substance P (7-11) is synthesized from 2-aminoisobutyric acid by the enzyme amidohydrolase, which hydrolyzes it into 2-aminoethanol and 11-ketoprotoporphyrin. The sequence of reactions that are involved in the production of substance P (7-11) have been shown to be similar to those for other peptides, with propulsive sequences being particularly important for its production. In vitro studies have shown that high concentrations of this molecule can cause conformational changes and chloride ion release.
