Sanguinarine is a natural product that has been shown to inhibit cancer cell proliferation. It has been found to have an anticancer effect in clinic trials, and has significant effects against a broad spectrum of cancers. Sanguinarine citrate, the active form of sanguinarine, is a cytotoxic drug that binds to cip2a (cellular inhibitor of protein kinase A) and inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Sanguinarine also inhibits the synthesis of proteins by binding to amino acids in the ribosome. This leads to inhibition of DNA replication, which results in apoptosis of cancer cells.
