1-(3-Trifluoromethylphenyl)piperazine free base is a potent 5-HT2 receptor agonist. It has been shown to be a potent activator of the 5-HT2A receptor in primary cells and may exhibit physiological effects. This compound is used as an analytical reference standard for the measurement of serotonin levels in biological samples, such as human serum or platelets. 1-(3-Trifluoromethylphenyl)piperazine free base has been studied as a drug in humans for the treatment of autoimmune diseases and depression, but is not yet marketed. The drug has also been shown to have locomotor activity, which may be due to its ability to stimulate the 5-HT2 receptors.
