2,4,7,9-Tetramethyl-5-decyn-4,7 diol is a model system for studying the effects of hydroxyl radicals on organic matter. It reacts with an inorganic acid to form an organic acid and a water molecule. The reaction solution was analyzed by means of plasma mass spectrometry and found to contain malonic acid. This compound has been shown to be genotoxic in vivo and in vitro studies. In addition, 2,4,7,9-Tetramethyl-5-decyn-4,7 diol has been identified as the major chemical constituent in wastewater from coal gasification plants that causes long term toxicity when exposed to rats.
