2,6,8-Trichloropurine ammonium salt is a reaction product of 2,6,8-trichloropurine and ammonium hydroxide. It has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of protein in tissue cultures and to be cytotoxic.
2,6,8-Trichloropurine ammonium salt reacts with proteins in the cells. This reaction produces chloropurine dimers that are not soluble in water and can only be solubilized with organic solvents such as acetonitrile or methanol. The formation of these chloropurine dimers is what inhibits protein synthesis in cell cultures.
The activation energy for this reaction is approximately 15 kJ/mol. Inactivation of virus by 2,6,8-trichloropurine ammonium salt has been observed at concentrations greater than 1 mM.
