Description

Risperidone is a psychotropic drug that can be used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. It belongs to the thioxanthene class of drugs, and has a pyrazole ring attached to its benzene ring. Risperidone has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect in animal models. It also inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and attenuates the inflammatory response in patients with skin cancer or bowel disease. Risperidone is an antagonist at dopamine D2 receptors, serotonin 5-HT2 receptors, histamine H1 receptors, alpha1 adrenergic receptors, and muscarinic M1 receptors. This drug is also an antagonist at alpha-receptors on cells of the liver, which blocks synthesis of fatty acids from carbohydrates and protein.
