Trifluoroborane dihydrate (BTF) is a cationic polymerization agent that has been used in vitro for the synthesis of monoamine neurotransmitters. Trifluoroborane dihydrate is also used to synthesize coumarin derivatives, which are pharmacologically active compounds. It is also used as an oxidizing agent in organic chemistry and to generate epoxides, which are reactive intermediates in many chemical reactions. BTF has been shown to cause muscle cell proliferation in vitro, and skin irritation studies have shown that it may be toxic to the skin. Trifluoroborane dihydrate has also been found to induce cancer in animal models and may affect chiral molecules by acyl chain lengthening or shortening. BTF has been shown to inhibit thrombin receptor activity, which may lead to a decrease in blood clotting.
