1-(2,4,6-Trifluorophenyl)ethanone (TFE) is a chemical that is used for the detection of carbonyl compounds in gas chromatography. It reacts with carbonyl compounds to form acetone or isomeric fluoroacetones. TFE can also be used to detect the presence of aldehydes and ketones in liquid chromatography. The sensitivity of TFE is high because it forms a fluorescent product from acetone and other carbonyls. The reaction products are detectable at concentrations as low as 10 parts per billion by weight. Interferences such as benzene and reagents can affect the results of an experiment using TFE.
