2-(2,2,3,3-Tetrafluoropropoxymethyl)oxirane (TFPM) is a difluorocarbene that reacts with boron trifluoride to form a polymeric material. TFPM is used in the synthesis of polymers and as a solvent for cationic polymerizations. The molecular weight of TFPM can be determined by injecting it into deionized water and measuring the viscosity. It is also possible to determine the molecular weight by layering it with tetrahydrofuran and then dehydrating it. When synthesizing TFPM, glycol can be used in place of deionized water. The reaction liquid is typically a mixture of glycol and cationic monomers such as methacryloxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride or styrene dimethacrylate.
