5-(Trifluoromethyl)dibenzothiophenium trifluoromethanesulfonate (5-TFDT) is a β-unsaturated ketone with an oxidant, organometallic and reactive properties. It is used in the synthesis of cyclopropenes and cyclobutenes. 5-TFDT can be reduced to 5-(trifluoromethyl)benzotriazole by using sodium borohydride as a reducing agent. The mechanism of the reaction starts with the formation of an enolate ion after reacting with a strong base such as lithium diisopropylamide (LDA). The electron deficiency on the carbonyl carbon leaves it susceptible to nucleophilic attack from alkyl halides or water. This leads to the formation of an enolate ion, which undergoes reductive elimination to form the desired product.
