Tetrabutylammonium bifluoride is a hydrogen fluoride-hydrofluoric acid mixture. It is used as a reagent in organic chemistry for the preparation of fluorinated organic compounds. Tetrabutylammonium bifluoride hydrolyzes to form hydrogen fluoride, which reacts with an electrophilic (electron-seeking) group on an organic molecule to produce a covalent bond. This process is called nucleophilic substitution and can be carried out in water or in an organic solvent such as acetonitrile. Tetrabutylammonium bifluoride is also used as a catalyst for polycarboxylic acid synthesis and as a crosslinking agent for polymers. The reactivity of tetrabutylammonium bifluoride is due to the presence of both nucleophilic and electrophilic groups on its two terminal carbon atoms. Tetrabutylammonium bif
