- Oil of turpentine
Turpentine oil is a volatile liquid obtained by the distillation of resin from various trees. It has been used as a folk remedy for centuries, and in recent years it has been found to have many medicinal properties. Turpentine oil is composed mainly of alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, and para-cymene. The main active components are terpenes that are responsible for its antiinflammatory activity. Turpentine oil also has monoclonal antibody reactivity against protein genes that can be used to differentiate between different types of cells in culture. This property can be used to identify liver cells or Chinese herb cells. In toxicity studies, turpentine oil was found to be nontoxic in rats at doses up to 5 g/kg body weight.
