Thiophene-2-acetyl chloride is a benzimidazole compound and an antimicrobial agent. The optimum concentration of this compound is 0.5-1.0 mM, but it has been found to be active at concentrations as low as 0.001 mM. Thiophene-2-acetyl chloride inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to their receptors and preventing the binding of essential nutrients such as amino acids, nucleotides, and cofactors. This drug also prevents the formation of intracellular hydrogen peroxide by inhibiting the enzyme heme oxygenase and has anti-HIV activity.
