Tetrahydro-4H-thiopyran-4-one 1-oxide is a sulphoxide that can be used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It can be made in two steps from chlorotrimethylsilane and sulphur dioxide. In the first step, the chlorotrimethylsilane reacts with an excess of sulphur dioxide to form a chlorotrimethylsulphide. The second step involves treating this intermediate with water to produce the desired product. Tetrahydro-4H-thiopyran-4-one 1-oxide has been used in the synthesis of β-unsaturated thiols, including tetrachloromethane, which is an intermediate in the synthesis of tetrahydrothiophene. This compound also undergoes rearrangements when heated with hydrochloric acid, yielding β-chloroacetic acid and hydrogen chloride gas.
