Tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-carboxamide is an active inhibitor of the human aldehyde dehydrogenase, which is responsible for the conversion of acetaldehyde to acetic acid. It has been shown to have synergistic effects with hydrochloric acid in vivo and in vitro. Tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-carboxamide has been used as a substrate in assays to identify other inhibitors of this enzyme, and it has been found to inhibit the growth of various types of cancer cells. Tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-carboxamide also inhibits inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. This drug has been approved by the FDA for use in humans as an oral agent for radiation protection and treatment of cancer.
