2,3,3-Trichlorotetrahydrofuran is a hydrogenated, oxidized derivative of 2-hydroxy-3-chloro-1,4-dihydropyridine. It is a stereochemically pure compound with the (2R)-configuration. The two chlorine atoms and the hydroxyl group are all in the same plane. This compound can be activated by chloride ion to form an electrophilic chlorocarbonium ion that reacts with aldehydes and carboxylates to form chlorocarbonate esters. It is also used as a precursor to make other chemicals such as tetrahydrofuran and naoac. Analysis of this compound shows that it has no stereoisomers or olefinic bonds.
