It is a sodium salt of the glycol ester of 2-[2-(bis(carboxylatomethyl)amino)ethyl]-1,3-propanediol. Tetrasodium 2-[2-(bis(carboxylatomethyl)amino)Ethyl-(carboxylatomethyl) amino] acetate has been shown to be effective against bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, by killing the bacteria in the gut.
