3,4,5-Trifluorobenzohydrazide is a synthetic chemical compound that is the precursor to amantadine. It inhibits influenza virus neuraminidase activity by binding to the active site of the enzyme and preventing it from cleaving sialic acid residues on host cell surface proteins. 3,4,5-Trifluorobenzohydrazide has been shown to have antiviral effects in cell culture assays against a variety of flu viruses. 3,4,5-Trifluorobenzohydrazide does not inhibit the neuraminidase from other viruses such as HIV or RSV. This drug has also been shown to be effective against influenza virus resistant strains and offers strategies for developing new molecules to combat viral infections.
