Tert-butyl hydrogen carbonate is a synthetic compound that reacts with amines to form a substituted tert-butyl carbamate. It is used in the synthesis of taxol and other pharmaceuticals. Tert-butyl hydrogen carbonate is converted to an acid catalyst by reaction with acids, such as acetic acid or hydrochloric acid, at room temperature. This conversion can be reversed by treatment with base, such as sodium hydroxide or sodium methoxide. This process can be repeated many times without significant loss of yield. The tert-butyl hydrogen carbonate has been shown to have an antiproliferative effect on cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. These effects are due to its ability to inhibit fatty acid synthesis and reactive oxygen species production.
