It has been shown to be a bidentate ligand with the ability to bind metal ions such as copper and nickel. 3,4,5-Trichloropyridine-2-carboxylic acid has also been used as a molecular probe for studying the interactions of hydrochloric acid with molecules. The carboxylic acid group found on 3,4,5-Trichloropyridine-2-carboxylic acid can be oxidized by electrolysis to form picolinic acid. This process occurs in crop plants and tissue culture cells. The residue of this process is plant tissue that contains picolinic acid and its derivatives such as pyridine ring. This product also has an acidic nature due to the presence of carboxylic acids.
