Trimethylvinylammonium bromide is a cationic, non-polymeric, liquid crystal composition that has been shown to have antibacterial properties. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the cell wall and interfering with the elimination reactions that are required for bacterial cell division. Trimethylvinylammonium bromide has an elimination reaction with chloride ions, which can be used to inhibit Gram-positive bacteria. This compound also binds to nitrogen nucleophiles such as pyrithione and hydroxy group in other molecules. The resonance stabilization of this molecule may be due to the presence of an electron withdrawing group (hydrochloric acid) and an electron donating group (atropine sulfate).
