Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic that blocks the action of aldosterone at the level of the kidney. It is used for the treatment of congestive heart failure, nephropathy due to diabetes mellitus, and nephropathy in patients with renal disease. Spironolactone prevents the accumulation of sodium and water by blocking angiotensin II receptors that are found in heart muscle and blood vessels. This drug also has an antihypertensive effect by inhibiting the release of renin. Spironolactone may be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
