Description:

Tetraphenylthiophene (TPT) is a molecule that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. It reversibly oxidizes in the presence of hydrochloric acid, producing hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide. The hydroxyl radicals cause irreversible damage to proteins within cells, causing cell death. TPT has also been shown to inhibit the growth of tumor cells by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting the production of inflammatory molecules such as prostaglandin E2. TPT emits light when excited with UV light or other wavelengths. This emission can be enhanced by adding molybdenum ions to the compound.
