Triphenylmethylazide is a diazonium salt that reacts with serine proteases to form a cationic polymerization. The formation of the polymers results in the inhibition of the activity of these enzymes. Triphenylmethylazide has been used as an analytical method for detecting dopamine and other related compounds. It is also active against infectious and inflammatory diseases, such as tuberculosis, pneumococcal infections, and malaria. Triphenylmethylazide has been shown to be effective in inhibiting infection by diphtheria toxin and bacterial toxins from Clostridium tetani. This drug inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine and prostaglandins, which may account for its anti-inflammatory effects.
