1,2,3-Trimethyl-3H-benzo[e]indole is a probe that reacts with hydrated organisms in the environment to produce a yellow color. It can be used as an indicator for the presence of sulfur in the environment. The reaction rate is dependent on the concentration of active sulfur and can be modified by transferring the probe to a more acidic or alkaline environment. This compound has been shown to react with bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis. It also reacts with fungi such as Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
