Trimethylcyclopentadienylplatinum(IV) is a catalyst that is used in hydrogenation reactions. It can be synthesized by reacting a platinum metal with 1,1-dimethylethylvinylcyclohexane and trimethylmethylcyclopentadienylboron. Trimethylcyclopentadienylplatinum(IV) has been shown to catalyze the hydrogenation of cinnamyl alcohol to cinnamaldehyde with an efficiency of 100%. This compound has also been shown to be stable when irradiated by x-rays for extended periods of time. Trimethylcyclopentadienylplatinum(IV) is used in devices as a photoelectron analyzer for analyzing the surface structure of silicon, boron nitride, and carbon nanotubes.
