N,N-Dimethyl-beta-alanine is a synthetic anticancer drug that has been shown to be potent against animal cancer cells. It is an analogue of the amino acid beta-alanine, which can be synthesized from N,N-dimethylaniline and methylamine. The synthesis of this compound was first reported in 1955 by Japanese chemists Shoji and Yamamura. N,N-Dimethyl-beta-alanine is metabolised by cytochrome P450 enzymes to produce metabolites that have anticancer activity. This compound also induces forskolin production in cells, which may lead to its anticancer properties.
