Description

2,4,6-Tribromophenyl allyl ether (2,4,6-TBPE) is a potent antiseptic that has been shown to reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections. It is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. 2,4,6-TBPE binds to the bacterial cell membrane surface and inhibits the uptake of nutrients by blocking the transport of ions through channels in the cell membrane. 2,4,6-TBPE also blocks other physiological processes such as protein synthesis and DNA replication. The chemical also exhibits mutagenic properties and can cause cancer in rats when ingested over a long period of time at high doses.
