Trimethylsilanol is a light-sensitive, reactive chemical that has been used in analytical chemistry. FTIR spectroscopy has shown that it contains a carbonyl group and a hydroxyl group. Trimethylsilanol can be used for the treatment of wastewater, which is usually contaminated with nitrogen atoms. Trimethylsilanol reacts with the nitrogen atoms to form ammonia and water. Trimethylsilanol can be used as a model system for reactions involving molecule activation energies. A reaction solution containing trimethylsilanol will react to form an unknown product if heated to the activation energy necessary for the reaction to occur.
