Timolol is a β-adrenergic receptor blocker that has been used in the treatment of high blood pressure, glaucoma, and choroidal neovascularization. It can be synthesized from maleic anhydride by means of an asymmetric synthesis. The purity of timolol is determined by liquid chromatography with fluorescein angiography as the validation method. Timolol impurity A (TIA) arises during production and is removed by column chromatography. TIA inhibits the proliferation of cultured cells and has been shown to have a potent inhibitory effect on choroidal neovascularization in clinical studies.
