TES sodium salt is synthesized by converting sodium carbonate into tes-carbonate, which reacts with naphthalene to form TES. The enzyme genes for this process are located in mitochondria, which are present in many tissues. TES can also be used as a regulatory molecule because it binds to DNA and alters its structure. This binding prevents transcription and replication, leading to bacterial cell death.
