2,4,6-Trichloropyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid is the precursor to a range of dyestuffs and intermediates. It can be prepared by the reaction of chlorine with carboxylic acids or chlorides. The temperature at which this reaction is carried out affects the yield, with higher temperatures giving better yields. Chlorination can also be achieved using sulfuryl chloride or fluorinating agents such as hydrogen fluoride or sulfur dioxide. 2,4,6-Trichloropyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid reacts with halides to form chlorides.
