3-Toluenesulfonic acid is a choline ester with the chemical formula CH3SO2CH2CH3. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. 3-Toluenesulfonic acid is used in organic synthesis and as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals, such as tolueneamines and benzeneamines. Its derivatives are quinoline derivatives that are more reactive than their parent molecule. The reaction of 3-toluenesulfonic acid with methylbenzene at high temperature produces impurities that may be removed by distillation or by adding hydrochloric acid. These impurities include chlorides, which produce hydrogen chloride gas, and linear isomers, which can be separated by fractional distillation. Linear regression analysis can be used to determine the rate of reaction for 3-toluenesulfonic acid
