It is used in the wastewater treatment process as an oxidizing agent for the removal of organic compounds from water. 2,3,5-Trichloropyridine is also used as a chlorinating agent for various purposes such as the production of acrylonitrile or the destruction of hazardous wastes. The reaction products are hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate. This substance may react with nucleophiles to form more reactive species such as nitronium ions.
