Tetrabutylammonium phosphate is a model compound for the study of the transport mechanism of organic solvents. It is a salt that can be used to inhibit the growth of bacteria in wastewater treatment and as an analytical method for determining p-hydroxybenzoic acid levels in food products. Tetrabutylammonium phosphate has also been shown to have anti-tumor effects on solid tumours and has been used as a negative control in electrochemical detection experiments. It binds to receptor molecules, such as methyl ethyl, through hydrogen bonding. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex with protein kinase C, which inhibits phosphorylation by protein kinase C, leading to inhibition of cell proliferation.
