Trihexylamine is a quaternary ammonium salt that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It is typically used in the form of its hydrochloride salt. It reacts with fatty acids to produce methyl ethyl and acid complexes. The hydroxyl group on the trihexylamine molecule can react with metal hydroxides, such as sodium carbonate, to produce an alkaline solution. This reaction produces a transfer reaction that leads to the formation of inorganic acid, which can be detected by chemical stability or electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Trihexylamine has been shown to be chemically stable when exposed to heat and light.
