Thallium (I) formate is a synthetic compound that has been used as an antibacterial agent. It has been shown to have activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Thallium (I) formate binds to bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to cell death. The ultracentrifugation of the compound in a density gradient allows for the separation of this substance from other components in the mixture. Thallium (I) formate is also used as a calibration standard for viscosity measurements under ultrasonic conditions.
