- 2,4,6,8-Tetraoxadecan-10-oicacid, 1,1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7,9,9-undecafluoro- (9CI)
3,5,7,9-Tetraoxaundecafluorodecanoic acid (TOAFD) is a perfluorinated compound that has been found to be toxic in animal studies. TOAFD is a sulfonic acid and its toxicity may be due to the substitution of an oxygen atom with a fluorine atom on the sulfur atom. TOAFD's toxicity may also be due to its ability to inhibit the synthetase enzyme, which is used by cells for protein synthesis. TOAFD has been detected in environmental samples at relatively low concentrations with high levels of chronic exposure. It is likely that TOAFD will have negative health effects such as liver damage or cancer. Analytical methods are being developed for TOAFD detection in environmental samples.
