Tetrahydrofuran is a colorless liquid with low molecular weight that has been used as an organic solvent and chemical intermediate. It is also used in the synthesis of other organic compounds, such as ethyl acetate and butanol. Tetrahydrofuran is produced by the reaction of propylene oxide with ammonia. The primary use of tetrahydrofuran is in the production of polyurethane (PUR) foam, which can be found in furniture, mattresses, car seats, and insulation boards. It also has been used as a solvent for paints, lacquers, varnishes, nitrocellulose resins, and dyes. Tetrahydrofuran has been shown to react with carboxylic acid to produce esters or amides.
