Toluidine blue is a drug that inhibits the growth of bacteria. It has antimicrobial activity against oral pathogens and is used in the diagnosis of bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease. Toluidine blue has been used to treat squamous carcinoma with a high degree of success. This compound also inhibits the development of cancer cells by interfering with cell division and blocking DNA synthesis. Toluidine blue binds to the bacterial membrane, which prevents it from taking up nutrients and leads to cell death.
